Anonymous Civil War letter, 1863 May 6.

An anonymous Union soldier writing from Barre's Landing (Port Barre) east of Opelousas, La., during the First Bayou Teche Campaign describes capturing rebel cotton and sugar; marching from Donaldsonville, through Thibodaux, up Bayou Teche, and on to Opelousas; Gen. Cuvier Grover's losses at the Battle of Irish Bend (April 14, 1863); skirmishing with rebels along the march; sending runaway slaves to plantations around New Orleans; and speaking with freedmen trying to learn to read in Baton Rouge.
